Senior Medical Coder (Full-Time)

Job Summary

This position requires a comprehensive high level knowledge of clinical science, advanced coding skills and knowledge of billing systems and health care documentation. The senior coder will be required to research complicated situations, provide education and training to other coders regarding documentation improvement strategies and research denials and write rebuttal letters.   This position will also serve as the trainer and auditor for new hires. 

Assigns codes for diagnosis and medical procedures using the 10th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD 10) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT). 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required
  • Minimum ten years coding experience
  • Must have a basic understanding of MS Office applications which include Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Education & Training
  • Associates of Applied Science preferred
  • Formal Documentation Improvement Training and/or Certification preferred

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  •  Responsible for timely review of patient records in order to identify an appropriate selection of codes that will accurately reflect the reason for admission, extent of care received and level of severity of illness.
  • Assigns and sequences codes correctly in order to facilitate appropriate payment. (i.e. DRG and APC)
  • Follow coding compliance policies, official coding guidelines, regulatory requirements and internal policies and procedures.
  • Maintains accuracy rate and productivity rate consistent with departmental policy.
  • Consult physicians for clarification and additional documentation prior to code assignments when needed. 
  • Enhances coding knowledge and skills with continuing education activities and by reviewing pertinent literature.
  • Complies with HPH Remote Coding Program contract. 
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible and completes all other duties as needed or requested
